Shirdi, a major pilgrimage center is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the state of Maharashtra. Known as the abode of the great saint Sai Baba, Shirdi attracts a huge number of religious tourists every day. Shirdi has a lot of sightseeing places of religious importance, significant to the life of Sai Baba. One such place is Gurusthan, a holy site situated quite close to the Sai Baba temple.
Gurusthan is known as the place where Sai Baba was first seen to the world as a 16 year old boy. There is a Neem tree here which is quite famous and is believed to have healing powers. This tree is significant as it provided shelter to Sai Baba and it is the very tree referred to in ‘Sai Satcharitra’. Renovated on 30th September 1941, Gurusthan contains a small shrine. On an elevated platform of this shrine, a portrait of Sai Baba is laid with a Shiva Linga and Nandi just in front of the portrait. Adjacent to it, a marble statue of Sai Baba is placed. Devotees throng this place in huge numbers, especially on Thursdays and Fridays and believe that if they burn incense here, their ailments will be cured. The Gurusthan temple doesn’t exist anymore as it was removed to make way for the Neem tree to grow. Gurusthan is also believed to be the place where Sai Baba’s Guru took Samadhi, hence the name Gurusthan.
A trip to Shirdi is incomplete without visiting the holy places significant to the life of Sai Baba. Gurusthan is definitely such a place which is very important as the world came to know of him at this very place. The spot where a 16 year old child ascetic was first seen meditating under a Neem tree is definitely a must visit place for all the ardent followers of Sai Baba. The peaceful atmosphere around will definitely make Sai Baba feel nearer to your soul.
